Fontysteam wins the Selfdrive Challenge again

Last year, the student team from Fontys University of Applied Sciences ICT won the Selfdrive Challenge. Today, they did it again. Not only was it an achievement to retain the title, but for the first time in the history of the competition, the course was completed flawlessly and in one go.

Eleven student teams from colleges and universities across the country participated in this year's Selfdrive Challenge, which has been held since 2019. The competition is organised by the RDW and aims to give students the opportunity to further develop their skills in the field of autonomous driving and to compete with each other.

Just like last year, the Fontysteam, which includes students, former students and lecturers from the High Tech Embedded Software research group, took part in the open category.

During the challenge, the self-driving vehicles developed by the teams had to take pedestrians into account and stop at traffic lights, among other things. The Fontos team did this flawlessly and faster than any of the other participants, and in one go. The secret behind this year's success was the “dream technology” designed by Sieuwe Elferink and applied to the vehicle.

‘It was fantastic,’ cheered project leader Frans Mouws afterwards. ‘We won again. But above all: flawlessly and in one go, and all within about six minutes. No one has ever achieved that before.’
